Assyrian Genocide Monument Approved

Fairfield Council has tonight voted to allow the construction of an Assyrian genocide memorial in a Bonnyrigg park.

Members of both the Assyrian and the Turkish communities gathered outside the council building to hear how councillors voted.

The memorial statue, to be built on the corner of Smithfield Road and Elizabeth Drive, will stand 4.5 metres tall.

The statue is dedicated to the 750,000 Assyrians who were killed by the Turks in the genocides of the early 20th century.

The massacre has not been officially recogonised by the Australian government and the approval of the monument has angered many Turkish people who deny that it occurred.
